Teeth brushing during grooming
Most Florida groomers offer teeth brushing as a $5–$15 add-on. It's worth it. Periodontal disease is the most common health issue in dogs and most owners don't brush at home consistently.
What's included: enzymatic toothpaste applied with a soft brush or finger brush, gentle scrubbing of the outer tooth surfaces, and a rinse. It's not a substitute for professional dental cleaning under anesthesia, but it slows tartar buildup between vet visits.
It does NOT include: tartar scaling (illegal for groomers without veterinary supervision in Florida), tooth extraction, or examination for oral disease. If your dog has bad breath, red gums, or visible tartar, schedule a vet dental cleaning.
Florida dogs have higher rates of dental disease than the national average — possibly due to year-round soft-food consumption (the heat makes dogs prefer wet food) and humidity affecting bacterial growth.
At-home routine: brush 3 times a week with dog toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste — fluoride is toxic to dogs. Dental chews and water additives help but don't replace brushing.
Annual professional dental cleanings at the vet cost $300–$800 in Florida. Worth budgeting for.
