Senior dog grooming
Senior dogs (typically 8+, sooner for large breeds) need a different grooming approach. Florida heat, humidity, and the prevalence of arthritis in older dogs all factor in.
Look for groomers who advertise senior-friendly service. They typically: limit appointment length to 90 minutes, use ramps instead of lifting onto tables, allow more breaks, and skip the high-velocity dryer in favor of cool low-pressure drying.
Mobile grooming is often best for seniors. No car ride (which is hard on arthritic joints), no salon noise stress, familiar driveway environment.
Senior-specific concerns: incontinence (more frequent sanitary trims), fragile skin (gentler shampoos), lipomas and skin growths (groomer should photograph and notify you), and cognitive decline (more standing rest required during the bath).
Florida-specific senior care: senior dogs overheat faster than younger dogs. Schedule grooming early morning during summer. Many older Florida dogs benefit from cooling cuts (de-shedding rather than full haircuts) — the topcoat insulates against sun while loose undercoat is removed.
Talk to your vet about mobility assistance during baths. Some senior dogs do better with sedation for grooming; never sedate without veterinary supervision.
If your senior dog refuses grooming, an at-home maintenance routine — daily wipe-downs, weekly brushing — can replace full grooms.
