Choosing a groomer

How often should you groom your dog?

Published 2026-02-09

The right grooming frequency depends on multiple factors. Here's how to figure out yours.

Coat type matters most. Long, curly, or wiry coats need full grooms every 4–6 weeks. Medium coats every 6–8 weeks. Short smooth coats every 6–10 weeks (mostly for bath, ears, nails — no haircut needed).

Florida humidity bumps frequency up. A coat that needs grooming every 8 weeks in Colorado may need it every 6 weeks in Florida. Mats form faster, hot spots appear faster, ears get infected faster.

Lifestyle matters. Beach dogs need monthly baths. Indoor lap dogs can stretch to 8 weeks. Active outdoor dogs (running, fetching, swimming) need more frequent grooming than couch dogs.

Coat health is the real metric. If you're brushing daily and finding no mats, you can stretch the schedule. If mats appear between visits, shorten the schedule (or improve home care).

Standing appointments save money and time. Most Florida salons offer 5–10% discounts for clients who book ahead.
