Choosing a groomer

How to choose a groomer in Florida

Published 2026-01-05

With 3,000+ groomers in Florida, choosing the right one is overwhelming. The factors that matter most aren't always the obvious ones.

Things that genuinely matter: the groomer's experience with your specific breed (or coat type), their handling style with anxious or senior dogs, salon cleanliness, communication style (do they answer your calls?), and willingness to follow your specific requests rather than defaulting to a standard cut.

Things that matter less than people think: price (within reason), location convenience, fancy-looking websites, social media follower counts. A great groomer in a strip mall is better than a mediocre one in a luxury salon.

How to evaluate before booking: ask for photos of recent dogs of your breed (Instagram is best). Read recent reviews specifically — old reviews can reflect a different staff. Call and ask 3 specific questions: "How long does a Goldendoodle full groom take here?" "Do you do hand-stripping or just clipping?" "What's your cancellation policy for sick dogs?" The answers tell you a lot.

First-visit signs of a good groomer: they ask about your dog's history, take time before starting, photograph the dog before and after, and explain what they did. A good groomer doesn't rush you out.

Red flags: they refuse photos, dogs are visibly stressed in the salon, no separate intake area, rough handling, unclear pricing, or your dog comes home with a cut you didn't ask for.
