Yorkshire Terrier grooming tips for Florida
Yorkshire Terriers have a single, hair-like coat (not fur) that grows continuously, doesn't shed much, and tangles fast in Florida humidity. The classic "Yorkie cut" — short body, longer ears and face — is what you'll see in 90% of Florida salons.
Daily brushing is non-negotiable for Yorkies, especially if you're keeping the coat longer than 1 inch. The hair tangles overnight, and matted Yorkie coats are painful — they pull at the skin with every movement.
Bath frequency: every 2–3 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Yorkie skin dries out fast, especially in air-conditioned Florida homes where the humidity drops to 50% indoors. Conditioner is essential.
Top knots: the topknot isn't just style — it keeps hair out of the eyes. Without it, the hair causes tearing, irritation, and eventually corneal damage. If you don't want to fuss with bows, ask your groomer for a "face frame" or short face cut.
Ears: stand erect on healthy Yorkies. If your dog's ears droop, ask the vet — could be ear infection, mites, or just genetics.
Florida-specific watch-outs: lawn chemicals on small dogs absorb fast through paw pads. Wipe paws after every walk on a treated lawn. Heat exhaustion is also a real risk — Yorkies are tiny, and sidewalks reflect more heat onto small bodies.
