Grooming a Goldendoodle in Florida
Goldendoodles dominate Florida grooming salons. The non-shedding coat that owners love also requires the most maintenance of any common breed — every 6–8 weeks for a full groom, plus daily brushing at home.
Florida humidity makes Doodle coats mat faster than they would in a dry climate. The curly outer coat traps moisture against the wavy undercoat, and within 3 days of skipping brushing, knots form. By 7 days, those knots become mats that have to be cut out.
The "teddy bear cut" — 2-inch length all over with a rounded face — is the most popular Florida Doodle style. It stays manageable longer than a longer cut and looks tidy in 80-degree weather.
Tools you need at home: a slicker brush (NOT a bristle brush — bristles slide over the surface and miss the mats forming underneath), a metal greyhound comb, and a detangling spray. Brush every 1–2 days, line by line, lifting the coat as you go.
Common mistakes: bathing too often (strips the coat and triggers more matting as it grows back), letting the face hair grow over the eyes, ignoring ear hair (Doodles are prone to ear infections in humid weather).
