Pomeranian summer cuts
Pomeranians are small dogs with massive double coats — think Husky-sized fur on a 5-pound frame. Florida summer is hard on them, and the wrong haircut makes it worse.
The "lion cut" or "teddy bear cut" — popular but controversial — shortens the body coat to 1/2 to 1 inch while leaving the chest and face fuller. It's adorable and helps with heat, but be aware: shaving Poms can cause "post-clipping alopecia" where the coat grows back patchy or doesn't grow back at all.
The safer Florida approach: deep de-shedding rather than a short cut. Strip the dense undercoat with a high-velocity dryer at the groomer, leaving the topcoat full-length. The double coat insulates against heat better than people realize.
Brushing: every 2 days with a slicker brush followed by a metal comb. Pom coats mat at the rump and behind the ears especially.
Schedule grooms every 5–6 weeks in summer, every 6–8 weeks the rest of the year.
Watch for overheating. A walk that's fine for a Lab can put a Pom in heat distress. Walk early morning, carry water, and watch for excessive panting. Florida sidewalks also burn paws — see our paw protection guide.
