How often to brush by breed
Brushing frequency depends entirely on coat type. Florida humidity bumps every recommendation up by one notch compared to dry climates.
Daily: Doodles (any kind), Maltese, Yorkies (long coat), Shih Tzus (long coat), Bichon Frises, Afghan Hounds, Old English Sheepdogs.
Every 2–3 days: Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians, Cavalier King Charles, long-coat Chihuahuas, Lhasa Apsos, Wire Fox Terriers.
3 times per week: Labradors, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Standard Poodles in shorter cuts, Yorkies in puppy cut.
Weekly: Boxers, Pit Bull mixes, Beagles, Hounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, smooth-coat Chihuahuas, Dobermans, Pugs.
Daily during shedding seasons (March–May, October–November): all double-coated breeds even if normally lower frequency.
Florida adjustment: increase frequency during peak humidity months (June–September) by 50%. Mats form faster in humid air.
If your dog comes home wet from rain, sprinklers, or pool: brush AFTER drying, even if it's not your scheduled day. Wet fur tangles into mats overnight.
Skipping a day is fine. Skipping a week creates a problem. Skipping a month creates a vet visit.
