DIY ear cleaning
Florida is the worst climate in America for canine ear infections. Weekly ear cleaning at home is the price of living here. Done right, it takes 5 minutes per dog.
What you need: an enzymatic ear cleaning solution (Epi-Otic Advanced, Zymox Otic, or vet-prescribed), cotton balls or gauze (NOT cotton swabs — they push debris deeper), and treats.
Technique: tilt the dog's head, fill the ear canal with the solution (you'll feel it squelch), gently massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds, then let the dog shake their head to bring debris to the outer canal. Wipe the outer ear with cotton.
What you should NEVER use: water, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or anything else not specifically designed for dog ears. All damage the ear canal.
How deep to go: only the outer ear visible to your fingers. Never insert anything into the ear canal — you can rupture the eardrum.
Frequency: weekly for floppy-eared breeds, every 2 weeks for upright-eared breeds. Increase frequency for swimmers and water-sport dogs.
When to stop and see a vet: redness, swelling, foul smell, brown or black discharge, head tilt, balance issues. These are infection signs that home cleaning won't fix.
