German Shepherd shedding in Florida
German Shepherds shed more than almost any other breed, and Florida's lack of true seasons means they don't get a clear shedding "off-season." Florida GSDs shed year-round, with two heavier blowout periods in spring and fall.
Tools that work: an undercoat rake (Furminator-style or similar), a slicker brush, and a high-velocity dryer at the groomer. Combined, these remove 90% of loose undercoat. Without them, GSD fur ends up on every surface in your house.
De-shedding treatments at a Florida salon: $30–$60 add-on, takes 30–60 minutes, removes a coffee can of fur. Schedule every 6–8 weeks.
Bathing: every 6–8 weeks. More frequent baths strip the coat oils that protect against Florida sun. Use a de-shedding shampoo on bath day to loosen the undercoat before drying.
Never shave a German Shepherd. The double coat is essential cooling. Strip the undercoat instead, but leave the topcoat intact at full length.
Ear care: GSDs have erect ears and lower infection rates than droopy-eared breeds. But Florida humidity and water sports still cause occasional issues. Clean monthly with an enzymatic cleaner.
Skin: watch for hot spots, especially on the rump and behind the ears. The thick coat traps moisture in summer.
