French Bulldog skin folds in Florida
French Bulldogs are one of the fastest-growing breeds in Florida — and one of the highest-maintenance for skin care despite the short coat. Their facial folds, tail pocket, and prone-to-yeast skin require daily attention in humid weather.
Facial folds: clean every single day. Use a soft cloth dampened with a gentle solution (50% water, 50% witch hazel works for most Frenchies). Dry thoroughly. Skipped folds breed yeast within 24–48 hours in Florida humidity.
Tail pocket: many Frenchies have a small fold under the tail. Check daily. Clean with the same routine as facial folds. Untreated tail pockets get infected fast and can require surgical removal.
Bath every 2–3 weeks with a hypoallergenic shampoo. Frenchies have sensitive skin and a history of allergies. Avoid fragrance.
Watch for: allergies (super common in Frenchies), hot spots, ear infections (despite the upright ears), and interdigital cysts.
Heat: Frenchies are brachycephalic (short-faced) and overheat dangerously fast in Florida. Never walk a Frenchie midday between May and October. Schedule grooming in the morning, drive directly home in air-conditioning, and skip outdoor time on hot days.
Find a Florida groomer experienced with brachycephalic breeds — they should know to monitor breathing during the bath and use cool-mist drying rather than a forced-air heat dryer.
