Doberman summer maintenance
Dobermans are surprisingly well-suited to Florida summer. The short, lean coat dissipates heat well, and the breed has fewer skin issues than many. But they're not invincible.
Bathe every 4–6 weeks with a hypoallergenic shampoo. Dobermans can have skin allergies (especially food-related), and Florida pollen worsens flare-ups. Watch for redness, itching, or hot spots.
Brushing: weekly with a rubber curry or hound glove. Removes loose hair and keeps coat shiny. Increase to twice a week during spring shedding.
Ears: cropped Dobermans have erect ears and lower infection rates. Natural-ear Dobermans need weekly cleaning, especially in Florida humidity. Use an enzymatic ear cleaner.
Nail care: monthly trim. Dobermans have strong fast-growing nails that can crack on Florida driveways and parking lots. Use a grinder for smoother results.
Health watch-outs that affect grooming: Dobermans are prone to color dilution alopecia (in blue and fawn coats), DCM (heart condition), and von Willebrand's disease (a clotting disorder). Tell your groomer if your dog has any of these — they affect bath safety and stress tolerance.
Skin: thin coat means easy sunburn on lighter dogs. Apply pet-safe sunscreen on white markings before outdoor time over 30 minutes.
