Diabetic dog grooming considerations

Published 2026-08-30

Canine diabetes is becoming more common in Florida, partly due to higher rates of obesity. Diabetic dogs have specific grooming needs and risks worth understanding.

Skin issues in diabetic dogs: thinner skin, slower wound healing, increased susceptibility to bacterial and yeast infections, and "bronzing" of the coat (yellow-brown discoloration, often around the face).

Tell your groomer your dog is diabetic before the appointment. They'll: avoid stress, use gentle shampoos, watch for skin issues that need vet attention, and avoid keeping the dog past expected pickup time (insulin schedules matter).

Bathing: every 4–6 weeks with a mild moisturizing shampoo. Avoid medicated shampoos unless prescribed.

Watch for skin infections — they happen faster and heal slower in diabetic dogs. Any redness, oozing, or persistent itching needs vet attention within 24–48 hours.

Stress affects blood sugar. Anxious diabetic dogs benefit from mobile grooming or short express appointments rather than long salon stays.

Bring a snack to the appointment. If the groom runs long, the dog may need a small meal to keep blood sugar stable. Confirm with your vet before adjusting feeding schedules.

Most Florida groomers can handle diabetic dogs with proper communication. Make sure they have your phone number on file in case any concern arises.
