Skin allergies and grooming
Florida's combination of high pollen, year-round grass growth, mold, and humidity creates the most allergy-triggering environment in the US for dogs. Most Florida dogs have at least mild seasonal allergies; many have year-round ones.
Symptoms: paw licking, ear infections, itchy belly, hot spots, hair loss in patches, recurring skin infections.
Grooming for allergic dogs requires a few adjustments. Use hypoallergenic, fragrance-free shampoo. Avoid medicated shampoos unless prescribed by a vet. Bathe more frequently — every 1–2 weeks — to wash allergens off the coat.
The high-velocity dryer used in salons is genuinely helpful for allergy dogs. It blows pollen and dander out of the coat far better than air-drying.
What to ask the groomer: "Do you offer hypoallergenic baths?" Most Florida salons say yes. "Do you sanitize tools between dogs?" Important for sensitive dogs. "Can you use my shampoo?" Many groomers will if you bring a vet-prescribed one.
For severe allergies, see a veterinary dermatologist. Apoquel, Cytopoint, and immunotherapy injections have transformed allergy management in dogs over the past decade. Expensive but life-changing for severe cases.
