Cuban heritage dogs (Bichon Habanero) grooming
The Havanese — the only dog breed native to Cuba — has a strong following in Florida, especially in Miami-Dade and Tampa Bay. The breed's silky double coat is well-suited to humid climates (it evolved in tropical Cuba) but still needs careful maintenance.
The traditional Havanese coat is corded — long, rope-like sections that take years to develop. Most pet Havanese in Florida wear a shorter "puppy cut" or "teddy cut" instead. The corded look is rare and requires extreme commitment.
Puppy cut maintenance: every 5–6 weeks, 1–2 inches all over, rounded face. Easy to keep clean in Florida.
For longer coats: daily brushing with a pin brush and metal comb, weekly baths with a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner, and detangling spray. Top knot to keep hair out of eyes.
Ear care: heavy ear feathering needs weekly check for tangles and moisture. Pluck inner ear hair at grooming visits.
Florida-specific note: Havanese tolerate humidity well — the coat actually evolved for tropical conditions. But they overheat fast in direct sun. Walk early morning and offer plenty of water.
Many Florida groomers (especially in Miami) speak Spanish and have specific experience with Havanese — ask if you want a stylist familiar with the breed's traditional standard.
