Choosing the right shampoo
The shampoo aisle is overwhelming. Most products are mediocre, and some are genuinely bad. For Florida dogs, the right shampoo depends on coat type and skin sensitivity.
For sensitive skin or allergies: hypoallergenic, fragrance-free shampoos. Look for "soap-free" and limited ingredient lists. Avoid: tea tree oil (toxic at higher doses), fragrances, and sulfates.
For double-coated breeds: de-shedding shampoos with omega-3 fatty acids loosen the undercoat. Use during heavy shedding seasons.
For oily coats (Cocker Spaniels, some terriers): clarifying shampoos with salicylic acid or chlorhexidine.
For white coats (Maltese, Bichons, Poodles): whitening shampoos. Use sparingly — they can dry skin if used every bath.
For yeast-prone skin: medicated shampoos with miconazole (vet-prescribed for active infections, OTC for maintenance).
Florida-specific recommendations: hypoallergenic + oatmeal blends work for most dogs. Allergic to pollen and grass? Get a clarifying-style shampoo with low fragrance to wash allergens off the coat.
Brands worth trying: Earthbath, Burt's Bees for Pets, Veterinary Formula Solutions. Skip cheap supermarket brands — the cost difference is small and quality difference is significant.
Never use human shampoo on dogs. Different pH, harsh detergents, can cause skin damage.
