Australian Shepherd in Florida heat
Australian Shepherds are working dogs bred for the American west — cool nights, dry days, ranch life. Florida is the polar opposite, and Aussies need a thoughtful grooming routine to stay comfortable.
The double coat is non-negotiable. Never shave an Aussie. The topcoat reflects sun, the undercoat traps cooling air. Shaved Aussies overheat faster, not slower.
What works: aggressive de-shedding every 6–8 weeks. The undercoat needs to come out, especially in spring (March–May) and fall (October–November). A professional de-shedding treatment with a high-velocity dryer is the gold standard.
Brushing: every 2–3 days with an undercoat rake plus slicker brush. Aussies have particularly heavy feathering on the legs, tail, and "skirt" that mats fast in humid weather.
Bath: every 4–6 weeks. Skip more frequent baths — they strip the coat.
Trim the sanitary area, paw pads, and around the ears. These are heat-trap zones in Florida.
Activity level: Aussies need exercise but can't get it midday in Florida summer. Plan workouts for 6–8 AM or after 7 PM. A grooming routine matters less if your Aussie is overheated and unhappy.
