Summer travel grooming tips for Florida road trips
Florida is a big state — Pensacola to Key West is 800 miles, more than New York to Atlanta. Summer road trips with a dog need grooming planning, not just kennel planning.
Get groomed 5–7 days before you leave. Right after a bath, dogs shed less but leave more dander on car seats. Five days post-bath is the sweet spot — clean coat, oil layer restored, minimum shedding.
Trim nails the same week. Long nails scratch leather seats and click incessantly on hard travel-crate floors.
For long trips, pack a "road grooming kit": brush, unscented wipes, a towel, ear cleaner, and a small bottle of dry shampoo for emergencies. Florida humidity plus AC creates condensation in cars that mats long-coat dogs surprisingly fast.
If you're heading north out of Florida — to Georgia, Alabama, or Tennessee — your dog may encounter tick species different from Florida's. Do a thorough tick check before getting back in the car at every stop.
Key West and the Florida Keys: extra saltwater exposure, plenty of sand. Pack a quick-rinse bottle for paws after each stop. Many Keys vacation rentals have outdoor showers — use them after every beach trip.
