Spring shedding season in Florida
Florida dogs shed year-round, but March through May is the peak. As temperatures climb from the 70s into the 90s, your dog's body sheds the slightly thicker winter coat that grew in November and December.
If you have a Lab, Husky, German Shepherd, or any double-coated breed, expect tumbleweeds of fur on the floor. The undercoat blows out in big clumps, especially during April. A daily 5-minute brushing session keeps it manageable.
The single most effective tool for spring shedding is a undercoat rake or de-shedding tool. The Furminator-style blades pull out loose undercoat without cutting the topcoat. Use it outdoors — a 10-minute session can produce a coffee-can full of fur.
Schedule a professional de-shedding treatment in mid-April. Most Florida groomers offer this as a 30–60 minute add-on for $20–$40 on top of a regular bath. The high-velocity dryer used in salons removes 5x more loose fur than home brushing.
If shedding seems excessive — bald patches, broken hairs, or itchiness — call your vet. Florida's pollen, mold, and grass allergies can mimic shedding but require different treatment.
