Hurricane evacuation grooming kit
Hurricane evacuations in Florida happen fast. Governor announces evacuation Tuesday afternoon, you're on I-75 by Wednesday morning, and you may not return for a week or more. Your dog's grooming supplies should be pre-packed in a labeled bin, not assembled in a panic.
Build it now, refresh in May before season starts. The bin should include: a 2-week supply of any prescription shampoo or skin medication, a slicker brush, undercoat rake, nail clippers, ear cleaning solution and cotton balls, unscented wipes, a towel, a leash, treats, current vaccination records (printed), and a recent photo of your dog with you in case you get separated.
Pet-friendly hurricane shelters exist in every Florida county under the 2019 PETS Act, but they require proof of vaccinations and a crate. Print the records — phone batteries die in 6-day power outages.
If you evacuate to a hotel, expect dirty paws and possibly an anxious dog. The wipes and towel get used hourly. Skip baths in evacuation hotels — hotel water often has different mineral content and can trigger skin reactions in dogs already stressed.
After a return: your dog may need a clarifying bath if floodwater contact occurred, plus a full check for ticks, fleas, and skin abrasions. Many Florida groomers offer post-storm "decontamination" services — call ahead to schedule.
